Executive director, Greg Whitby, spoke to the new leaders about effective leadership in schools

On Friday 10 February, newly appointed school leaders from Catholic schools in the Diocese of Parramatta participated in a leadership induction day at St Joseph’s Spirituality Centre, Baulkham Hills.

The induction is part of the newly appointed leaders program that is offered every year to new principals, assistant principals and Religious Education coordinators. It is the first of a series of sessions that the new leaders will attend throughout the year, in support of their leadership roles and responsibilities.

Executive director of schools, Greg Whitby, spoke to the new leaders about effective leadership in schools.

‘To be a leader you need to be the 3-R’s: radical, relentless and resilient,’ said Greg. ‘We know that good teachers improve student learning and as leaders of learning in your schools, it is your responsibly to ensure that you are supporting quality learning and teaching.’

‘As part of our 2012-2013 strategic focus on learning by inquiring, it is important that leaders reflect on their practice and learn from it,’ he said. ‘The more you learn about your craft, the greater the difference you can make.’

The day also included sessions on Catholic school leadership led by the Episcopal Vicar for Education, Fr Chris de Souza EV; Br Aengus Kavanagh and director of evangelisation and Religious Education, Ian Smith.

‘At the heart of leadership is unleashing talent and empowering others,’ said Br Aengus.

Learning by inquiring was launched at the annual system leadership day held at Rosehill Gardens in January.
